Fish Lake Area residents in Maple Grove have asked Three Rivers Park District (Hennepin County Parks) to inspect ever boat before it launches in to Fish Lake in Maple Grove. They want to do everything they can to keep the zebra mussels from investing their lake. The zebra mussels have become quite a problem for Lake Minnetonka which is the biggest and most popular lake in the Twin Cities metro. The Star Tribune has the story here.
Lake property continues to carry an impressive premium when it comes to home prices, but it also has risks. For example, Lake Minnetonka which offers some of the most expensive real estate not only in Minnesota, but in the country, continuously faces challenges with zebra mussels and eurasian milfoil. (Click here for the blog post from the Lake Minnetonka Association regarding maintaining and managing milfoil).
Several areas around the country are concerned about a particularly pernicious pest that is starting to show up and that’s the asian carp. Apparently they can grow to be nearly 100 pounds, are aggressive, and eat virtually everything in sight leaving precious little food for the other fish in the lakes and rivers. The Minnesota DNR has information regarding the prevention efforts to keep these species out of our lakes and rivers.
If you want to stay up to date regarding what’s going on with our lakes in the Twin Cities area, a very good site with regular communication is the Lake Minnetonka Association blog. I will permanently post a link under my “links” in the right hand column of my blog for future reference.
